Been to the Library Lately?

(I originally wrote this for my homeschool site..but after reading it I decided it needed double posting. If you are not a reader of the HS site.. I didnt want you to miss this post! .. After reading this.. go and bother a librarian! :)

AHH.. the Library.
When I was a child I loved going to the library. But why? Because it was a place I could ride my bike that was far from home. It was a place I felt safe, although a little nervous i might be too loud. They had Story Time! A Photo Copier! I was so intemidated by the card catalog but so proud when the librarian taught me how to use it! It is amazing that I was married and almost out of college before I read my first book from cover to cover.

We go to the library two and sometimes three times a week. I now consider myself a "Library Nerd". (Acording to a my friend Melissa and one of our librarians all that is required to be a Library Nerd is to have your library card number memorized).
The excitement of finding the book I need or better yet, getting a book through interlibrary loan! (You know.. the one you thought you never in your wildest dreams would be able to get your hands on!).

On our shelf in our den we have atleast 120 books checked out from our local library. "Do you really read all those?" yep. With six kids in the house, and 5 quiet reading times a week, with each kid choosing atleast 4 books apiece.. we go through the books. I have learned to LOVE our library. I wish I would have really known how valuable my time at the library was when I was a kid. I would have been much better educated for it.

Here what other people have been saying about the Library:

"I have found the most valuable thing in my wallet is my library card." -- Laura Bush, First Lady

I am what the librarians have made me with a little assistance from a professor of Greek and a few poets. ~Bernard Keble Sandwell

The best of my education has come from the public library... my tuition fee is a bus fare and once in a while, five cents a day for an overdue book. You don't need to know very much to start with, if you know the way to the public library. ~Lesley Conger

Knowledge is free at the library. Just bring your own container. - Unknown

Libraries: The medicine chest of the soul. ~Library at Thebes, inscription over the door

To those with ears to hear, libraries are really very noisy places. On their shelves we hear the captured voices of the centuries-old conversation that makes up our civilization. ~Timothy Healy

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. ~Cicero

The student has his Rome, his Florence, his whole glowing Italy, within the four walls of his library. He has in his books the ruins of an antique world and the glories of a modern one. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"In early days, I tried not to give librarians any trouble, which was where I made my primary mistake. Librarians like to be given trouble; they exist for it, they are geared to it. For the location of a mislaid volume, an uncatalogued item, your good librarian has a ferret's nose. Give her a scent and she jumps the leash, her eye bright with battle."
(Catherine Drinker Bowen. From: Adventures of a Biographer, 1959)

and my quote:
"The Library, ahh.. I would rather go there than to a spa and get a massage ANYDAY!"

Why do people have children anyway?

Its so amazing the thnigs I hear Moms say. I was at the grocery store and saw this Mom with two precious boys. One was 16 to 18 months the other around 4. Cute as can be! I waved at the little one cause he was looking at me and then walked down the isle to get what I needed. A few minutes later I walked past them again and heard a older lady saying how precious this womans children were. "You have such beautiful and sweet boys there!" she said. The Mom, said, "Well.. thanks! Do you want them?" .. I COULDNT BELIEVE IT! Those poor babies hearing from their Mother that she doesnt want them and is willing to give them to any stranger in the store? Talk about sad. Oh i said a prayer right then and there. I also had to refrain from saying "I will take them if you dont want them!" just so they know that they are wanted. I wanted to ask the Mom.. "did you just hear what you said?" "Did you hear what I heard coming out of your mouth?"... hum.. I didnt. I was quiet.

I also have heard parents say "OH i could just KILL my kids sometimes!".. and "My kids get on my nerves"

So Why in the world do people have kids today? Just because? Do they see it like getting pet? Or just have kids cause it is the thing to do? I am so confused. Sad and Confused. Do parents not realized that THEY are responsible for training up the "children that get on their nerves and they cannot stand being around?" Its really sad when most of the parents I see out and about with thier children are "in a state of being irritated, angry, or boiling over with rage" .. "GET YOU BUTT DOWN!, SHUT UP!!!, YOU SUCH AN IDIOT!.. NO I WILL NOT TAKE YOU TO THE BATHROOM.. YOU CAN JUST PEE IN YOU PANTS FOR ALL I CARE!(the last quote said to a child 6 or 7 years old) .. I have heard all these things said to precious children, mostly babies, 3 and younger. Where have joyful children gone? Happy children with that sparkle in their eyes.. ? Sad to say but the parents have threatened, degraded, and screamed they joy out of them.

What can be done? Don't they know life doesnt have to be that way?

So Why do people have kids these days? hum.

SAD.

I couldn't imagine my life any other way

"Now, that work which is of most importance to society is the bringing-up and instruction of the children - in the school, certainly, but far more in the home, because it is more than anything else the home influences brought to bear upon the child that determine the character and career of the future man or woman. It is a great thing to be a parent : there is no promotion, no dignity, to compare with it. The parents of but one child may be cherishing what shall prove a blessing to the world. But then, entrusted with such a charge, they are not free to say 'I may do as I will with mine own.' The children are, in truth, to be regarded less as personal property than as public trusts, put into the hands of parents that they may make the very most of them for the good of society. And, this responsibility is not equally divided between the parents : it is upon the mothers of the present that the future of the world depends, in even a greater degree than upon the fathers, because it is the mothers who have the sole direction of the child's early, most impressionable years. This is why we hear so frequently of great men who had good mothers - that is, mothers who brought up their children themselves, and did not make over their gravest duty to indifferent persons." Charlotte Mason, 1893,

===================
When people ask me why I homeschool and say "I could NEVER do that!" it makes me sad. I am not super woman, I am do not hold a degree in "education", I am not a wealthy, well organized, super intelligent woman. I consider myself poorly educated, even though I have a college degree. I consider myself very poorly read, and neither math nor spelling are not my strong points.
So you ask why it makes me sad? It saddens me because they have no idea what they are missing! Most people have it in their minds they have to be something special or have some special degree to teach their children. That is flat out wrong! Our society has been brainwashed into thinking this way. They are something special BECAUSE they are MOM..or DAD.
You might ask.. so what are they missing? .. well heres a short list of the memories I have through homeschooling:
....my kids reading their first books
.... Catherine looking up her first word in the dictionary.
... cozy days when its raining outside and we lay in the floor for hours reading great books.
....walking into the kids bedroom and "catching" Catherine reading the Bible to the boys, and the boys quietly alert.
... Imaginations soaring high.. (using the dog leashes to make reigns for a brother sister or friend to be a horse, plays made up with themes from Odysseus and Little House, my children suddenly turning invisible or any other creature imaginable (including ancient god or goddesses, this list could go on and on)
.....cooking together (my kids in the kitchen baking a cake together and having a great time)
......getting asked questions/ questions/ questions.. "what is infinity?", "Is a avocado a fruit or a veggie?" "What's 234 plus 10,000?" "Where does the water go when it goes down the drain?" "Can I built a tent?" and "why do we HAVE to go to bed when you say?" "why did God make the devil?" "Is that latin or greek?"(someday I will write down all the questions i get asked in one day..THAT would be interesting)
... getting hurt/hurting someone, saying "I am sorry" hugging and "are you ok?"
.....team work... (5 minute clean ups, backyard obstacle courses, and organized dance parties)
....hugs...
....laughter..
... JOY!... even on the days that nothing seems to be going right.

My list of things could go on and on forever. All I know is that I would have never thought 10 years ago that I would homeschool but NOW I couldn't imagine my life any other way. Life is too short, memories are too sweet, and my kids education is too important.

I realize that homeschooling is a choice that many do not make. The older my children get the more I realize that we are different, and that is ok. The choices we make in raising our children (not just our choice to homeschool) are important ones. I truly believe that the vast majority of parents make decisions that they think are the BEST for THEIR children. Different things are important to different people. Some consider the physical environment (their homes) most important, some its providing the lastest fashion or tech trend, providing the newest or best quality physical environments. Other people place importance on the future, the best schools, the right sports programs, the best private lessons, so their children can get in the best college. Each person has their own reason for what is MOST important to them when raising their children. Here's to raising the children God blessed us with to the best of our ability.

Sink Reflections etc

Well, my time was up with Sink Reflections. I actually was one day overdue taking it back to the library.. I tried to recheck it but SOMEONE has a hold on it. :) I was really finished with it so its ok, I will just use the flylady website for inspiration.

I am so ready for spring. The kids are ready too I think.. (not that we have had much of a winter) .. it will just be nice to have some more warm days.. a week of cold days is over load for me!

I worked on the kids mural in their room this past weekend.. added four or five trees in the distance, two clouds and two ducks on the pond..I have decided to take a flylady approach to painting.. just thirty minutes a weekend.. (of course that turns into two hours).. but I find it so relaxing and I need my thirty minutes a week of creative time :)

just a few silly pictures to keep the visual interest on my blog :)

yesterday we had three fire trucks a few houses down. Come to find out the college girls that live two houses down had a fire inside the house.
Here is my flylady kitchen.. my sink is glowing and I can fold laundry on my counters! I never thought that was possible! Now if I can just get new thingies on my cabinets so my doors will stay closed :)

in the mood for a change

When I was a kid I LOVED to rearrange my room. I changed my room around once a month. Keeping it clean.. well that is another matter. I just realized i blog much like I kept my room when I was a kid. I like to change and rearrange it (in the form of new backgrounds) and I dont keep it too clean although I try my best (in the form of poor spelling and incorrect grammar).. BUT .. even though i changed things a lot when i was a kid.. it was still my home... so too with my blog.. although it gets a little messy.. its the thoughts that count! .. (remember i am an artist.. and sometimes i enjoy creative grammar!)

So.. heres the new look.. for now.. i hope I can get my type a little bigger so i dont feel so old cause its seems hard for me to read.. so we will see how long i keep this look.. but I do like the colors better.. and i think it is more ME>> :)

Visits!

Well, I told my friend Jessica that this would make the blog. Last night I was soooo surprised and THRILLED to hear my sweet friend Jessica's voice coming out of my computer! Her and her husband Joel are in Taiwan, teaching English. They told me about a system called Skype that you can use to do video phone but .. to my great joy.. it works even if you dont have a camera. It was 10pm ish (Mon) our time and around noon (Tues) their time. When I answered the "skype phone" I was expecting to be live chatting (typing) with her. So I yelled.. (and YELLED) with surprise when she said "Ruth .. are you there?" .. OH it was great! We ended up speaking for about thirty minutes and it was so fun! The kids and Joel got in a bit on the call and Trixy even barked hello! .. Catherine was happy to get to recite Jabberwocky all the way to Taiwan! The internet is so amazingly amazing! (best part of the whole deal is that it was FREE!)..

This morning I was soooo happy to see my sweet friends Sarah and TTTTracey.. They were both gainfully employed as Hall Staff when I was a dormmom and it was so great to see them again! It was just like old times .. The visit was so awesome but as always not long enough.. I could spend days talking to those two great gals!

I just got back from taking Catherine and Kaleb to Safety City.. AND FORGOT TO TAKE MY CAMERA!.. I couldnt believe it. (you can read more on our adventures today on our homeschool blog)

I must tell you that I feel like I am actually getting the hang of this home management thing.. thanks to the Flylady! .. (Mom, you will be pleasantly surprised that my bed has been made up every day for the last.. oh I cant remember).. .. I use to think I was just "Not good" at keeping a clean house.. but the flylady has set me in the right direction. Who knew a dishpan under the sink and a "do it now" attitude could make such a clean house! .. Of course I still have a long way to go.. many areas to declutter and organize.. but atleast I am not overwhelmed anymore! (yipee)

I walked on the treadmill yesterday for the first time in two weeks, it felt sooo good to get going again. I would still like to train for a marathon.. after I get a few 5ks and 10ks under my belt.. and hope to run one on or the month of my 40th birthday.. I have a few years to train for it.. so we'll see.. (anyone care to join me?)

Pictures-our Sunday

Come sit by the fire a minute will ya!
Who needs an game cube when you have a Daddy Dolly!

I just LOVE cooking :) Esp when I here the boys yell "OH YEAH .. its fried chicken nuggets!!!" and then do a little dance.

We are enjoying a nice relaxing Sunday afternoon. The kids are working in the kitchen, making Angells famous chocolate cake! Ahh.. the joys of parenthood! :)..

I got my results back from the doc last week and they had to draw more blood for testing. They think I might have some kind of autoimmune problem. I will get the results back hopefully by Wednesday or so.

Catherine and I went yesterday and saw Chronicles of Narnia. We both really enjoyed it. The special effects were amazing. Catherine also got to take her earings out last night (check out her blog for pictures), she is now wearing some of my hoops. I just cant believe how quickly the kids are growing up.. its going by too fast! someone press the pause button for me. :)

Well, I am off to see if any Olympics are on and then take a nap :)

Smore's are fun!

What smore could I ask for?
yummy yummy
ooooh.. hot hot hot..
now you see my smore.. now you dont.
smore art.

I think this is only the second time the kids have had smores. I stand back and try to ignore the ingredients as they down this "non-food" creation. Every once and a while wont hurt them right? I couldnt bring myself to eat a marshmallow (if you really want to know what it is made of.. let me know..) .. but I did have chocolate on a graham cracker! ..

check out what history says about the marshmallow:
Ancient Egyptians were the first to enjoy a gooey treat now called marshmallow as early as 2000 BC. The treat was considered very special and it was reserved for gods and royalty.
(see the link to see what's in todays marshmallows)

(anyone know where I can get some non-gelatin marshmallows? would love to try those!)

Happy Monday!

Doc, Pig and the Flowerpot!

We'll I was finally talked into going to the doctor. My big Sis came for a visit and Joel and she ganged up on me.. WEll.. my blood pressure being so low also convinced me something wasnt right.
I have been just tired all the time .. for quite a while now. I have had trouble sleeping for a few years and I always thought that was a the reason I was tired.. but could not sleeping make my blood pressure get in the 80s/40's..hum..

so Thursday I went to my doctor and he thinks it could be hypothyroidism.. I got blood work done on Friday and should know something this week..

The kids have been doing great! Catherine is reading "The Secret Garden" and is enjoying it. The boys are loving the weekend cause they get to play video games. Mel. gave us a pig heart and a baby pig that she got from the University's science department. Yesterday morning we had time to get it out and look at it. The kids didnt like the way it smelled (Fomaldehyde) but were very interested in seeing the insides. I am sure they will never forget that!

Joel got me a flowerpot for Valentines. I was so surprised! I didnt ever realize what a flowerpot was. But to my surprise he explained it was a computer from Apple. (an IMAC).. I am really enjoying it so far and know it help my blogging "addiction" :)

My "sink reflections" experience has been great. That Flylady knows what she is doing! I had looked at her website before but it took reading the book to really get what she was saying. I tell you my kitchen has been constantly clean for almost a whole week, thanks to that dish pan under the sink idea she had. I feel like I am finally getting my house under control!
Her site is flylady.net check her out!

Where have I been?

I know those of you who care.. WHERE I"VE been! .. heres a short answer.

well.. a quick trip to houston last week (for joel to go to a funeral), a few doctor appointments, and 20 loads of laundry later.. I am back.. with a shining sink to boot! ..

I FINALLY got my copy of SINK REFLECTIONS.. and signed up on FLY LADY.. and let me tell you the difference at my house is great! Just the simple idea in her first chapter of putting a dishpan under the kitchen sink for the kids to put dirty dishes in has made a HUGE difference.. our first try this morning left my kitchen spotless after breakfast! WOW!.. ..

I got caught up again on my laundry and a few nights ago I went to the laundry room to check on things and Cat had left me a sign on the top of my washer- '"WAY TO GO!!!" .. in bold colors! .. I LOVED it.. and of course it will become a permenant fixture on my washer! ..

I have a dr appointment tomorrow.. hoping to find out why I am soooooo tired and COLD all the time! .. I also have been having low blood pressure which makes me feel BAD.. so hopefully the doc will have the answer.. I think its thyroid.. but who knows..

I am off to do the ironing before reading time with the kids..
Happy Wednesday!
